Can't play you tube with VLC and can't uninstall it

I can't play you tube video's and some other links friends email me with VLC. Tried to uninstall it as described in the "read me" file; but I get an error message that I "don't have enough authority". There is no network and I have this on my home computer (mac with safari 10.4.9...
