In case anyone is having this problem at the moment. The command line option is --rc-fake-tty.
I don't know whether this has changed since the original post was made, but it took me a few minutes to find it so I thought I'd leave a note here.

Found the answer myself. --no-show-intf was what I was looking for. The actual problem was that bringing up the remote interface was failing though, so it was using the gui instead. *DOH*

Linux alternative to --rc-quiet

Hi, I am using VLC with the remote interface under Kubuntu and don't want the graphical user interface to be shown. Is there something like --rc-quiet found in the windows version with which I can stop this from happening under linux? My current command line options are "--intf rc --rc-host=loc...
