Open Recent does not work for me either. I've run a few vids, clear the Open Recent menu list, and quit. Start VLC again and ... voila! The very list I "cleared" reappears. Again and again. This IS a bug. :x I've had this happen for quite some time, but never posted. I'm glad I'm not alone...

How do I disable the Open Recent feature (found in the File menu in OS X's version) or automatically clear its list when I quit VLC?

I've gone through every single(!) option found in the basic and advanced preferences and cannot seem to locate this option to disable and enable. Using 0.8.6b.

Download and install Perian. Now watch and scrub FLV files using Quicktime Player.

Random access in FLV files sorely needs fixing. It's a bit of a pain having to watch and wait for the particular moment in a long video such as Charlie Rose.
