You should make a fork of VLC that keeps all the nice stuff you can't include due to legal reasons.
I can do it in a few years when I have learned to programm if noone has done it by then.

unfortunely not. the problem is in the DVD-reader not VLC.

You could google for RPC-1 firmware for your dvd-player, just take all warnings seriously because this could leave your dvd-player unusable

you say it is a .avi file. is there a file on the DVD called movienameblablabla.avi try opening that file instead of trying to 'open disc'
