How do I find that info?

Using the streaming/transcoding wizard in the VLC media player, what would I convert the file format (MKV) to play? Thanks in advance.

I just downloaded the first new episode of 24. It is in MKV format. It plays for about 5 minutes and then just 'quits'. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance
