I'm having the same problem on my MacBook Mac OS X 10.4.8, although it seems to happen quite random. Also I've experienced that "files" seem to dissapear after being played in VLC from a DVD, I have to eject and reinject to be able to see them again. Not sure if this is VLC related, it see...
