Yes! You can use other output modules, but all of these put the weight of decoding on your CPU and typically there is reduced quality.

AC3 in any player is 8 dB lower in level than DTS or MP3. Unlike most players VLC offers 6 dB of gain rather than 0 dB or unity gain at the top of the slider.
