Is there any advice for us please, as I'd really like to use my iPad to watch videos from my TrueNAS NAS using VLC, but it's currently broken to the point of not being usable.

No, this is not the expected behaviour. This sounds very annoying. Are you sure that the password that you stored doesn't have a typo? Can you delete it and save again? It is very annoying haha! Yep, definitely no typo as the directory loads ok and I can enumerate subfolders and files. Have deleted...
