Thanks for your reply. As mentioned I tried various codecs, all with the same result. Happily, I finally got the job done using FabDVD Converter. Not that I am recommending FabDVD. Horrible and confusing UI, extremely deceptive pricing policies, no support. BUT, it did in the end do the job.

I am converting avi files to mp4. I have tried various codecs. The resulting mp4s are noticeably grainier than the source avi.
