Re: Youtube videos on VLC

Thanks for help Hitchhiker, I've overwritten youtube.luac files, as you said, and tried again .... No more error message, but VLC screen remains black, with the cone in the middle. I also tried with an other link : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQzCIaGx-Bo, same problem ! Does https://www.youtube...

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

Thanks for the upload. Interesting observation: I downloaded your log and then ran the same yt link to create my own log. My log contains the CONSENT PENDING flag while yours doesn't. Here's a pix of the two compared. https://i.postimg.cc/TKgN4CLK/vampiros-consent-flag-missing.png (click to enlarge...

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

Tell you what Vampiros: why don't you do the honours and go file the bug for us? P.S. Having a Gitlab account doesn't allow you to escape the 2FA requirement on the code.videolan site. ;) Your word is my command. Bug filed (https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/26060) with screenshot adde...

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

Thanks, that youtube-dl program looks very useful. :)

As mentioned before, I believe you can avoid 2FA by creating an account with GitLab.com (https://gitlab.com/users/sign_up) and using that account to log in to code.videolan.org.

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

This is mostly not the videolan fault. The whole help of the code is just provided by Gitlab. So they need to contact the Gitlab guys, so they would address this and extend the list with some desktop programs.

Thanks for the clarification! A good suggestion. :)

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

You don't need a smartphone for 2FA in the first place. There are also "desktop" applications available. Yes, that is exactly what we have been discussing. The message on https://code.videolan.org informing the would-be contributor that 2FA is required lists mostly smartphone-only "a...

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

Afterwards, I found this solution on the wiki . A good find, at least they understand that 2FA is preventing some unsmartphonised people from contributing. As stated above, another solution is to create an account at https://gitlab.com/users/sign_up and then use that account to sign in. Gitlab.com ...

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

At the end, all you need is a command like oathtool -b --totp 'N3V3R G0nn4 G1v3 Y0u Up' and it generates your PIN. The only problem - it works just for the current session. So after logoff, on the next logon, one have to repeat the PIN generation. But on the bright side: one don't have to install s...

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

3.0.15 has been removed due to failures in Windows 8.1: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?p=518252#p518252 After the issues have been fixed and 3.0.15 is re-released it might not work in Win XP afterwards. Thanks for the warning! If I discover any problems with the latest release of 3.0.15 I...

I finally updated to version 3.0.15, and it looks to work great on Windows XP. Thanks for the fix! I will try to test nightly builds from time to time.

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

Historically, for every major VLC releases, somebody or other promised to maintain the previous release, and then failed to actually do so in any meaningful extent and for any meaningful length of time. I surmise that the reasons are always the same: nobody wants to spend their free time maintainin...

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

The "milestone" for this has been set to 3.0.13. I interpret that to mean that the goal is to have it working in version 3.0.13.

Re: Youtube videos on VLC

The videolan site to file bugs to has changed and has moved to code.videolan.org. It's now become necessary to register there which requires 2FA. After creating username and p/w users are presented with a QR code. The problem here is that my phone doesn't support that so I can't complete the regist...

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

In case anyone is wondering how to work around this, you have to replace the file libfreetype_plugin.dll from version 3.0.12 with the same file from version 3.0.11. To extract the file from version 3.0.11, you can use 7-Zip or a similar zipper program on the vlc-3.0.11-win32.exe installation file. L...

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

So now we know the latest version of libfreetype_plugin.dll provided with VLC 3.0.12 is not XP compatible. Yes, as mentioned above I've gotten confirmation that this is "a compilation issue". So we can hope that this will eventually be fixed in version 3.0.12 and future (if any) version 3...

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

I too installed 3.0.12 on several XP machines this week hoping to pick up any recent improvements. It was very slow to random-seek. Watching a movie on DVD, the sound occasionally cut out; this DVD had two English audio tracks and switching was sometimes a solution. I didn't try subtitles. It was e...

Yes, I've now done that and gotten confirmation that this is "a compilation issue".

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

Try to use "\plugins\text_renderer\libfreetype_plugin.dll" from previous version of VLC (3.0.11). Now we're getting serious... This works! Full functionality seems to be restored. :D I figure there may be some incompatibilities, but in a quick test I have both on-screen display and subtit...

Not shown here, but in the screenshot you posted to github, simple menu Subtitles / OSD menu where it reads Default Encoding change Default (Windows 1252) to Universal (UTF-8). Do the usual Save, exit and restart. If it doesn't revert to default again change MS Shell Dlg 2 to Arial. Save and restar...

What if you type or copy/paste Freetype2 font renderer in the Search field? Do you get an error message?

This is what I get:

That's odd: the complete Video menu is missing in your screenshot. Does it appear in the Simple mode? Yes, there is a Video section in "Simple" settings as well as in "All" settings (see screenshots below). However, when you start to type in the Search area (in "All" s...

Re: new version 3.0.12 on win XP - Subtitles loaded but not shown

I have only tried SRT subtitle files, and they don't work. Additionally, there is no on-screen display of any kind, which suggests that this is in fact the same problem as the one reported here:

Right, here is the latest screenshot, typing "text renderer" in "All" settings and using the ugly  default XP interface. The Freetype2 font renderer is unfortunately still missing. Again, this supports the idea that "The freetype module does not seem to load". Any ...
