Well i've used several DVDs with this so far with SPDIF. Are you using 5.1 analog or SPDIF?
I'm using it over analog.

The last build that this worked correctly was 0.8.4a. See my post in http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?p=95993#95993 for more information about the problem. I compiled the 0.8.4a version. I downloaded the source files and compiled 0.8.6 version in Ubuntu Dapper. The problem still exists. Problem with 5.1 sound in Ubuntu

Whenever I try to play a movie with 5.1 sound, the sound output is garbled. If I chose the audio device as stereo, it works fine. The same movie plays fine in Totem with 5.1 output. My VLC version is 0.8.5.
