You can upgrade with it without having to uninstall first.

VLC for Android 3.3.4 is an old version. Did you mean 3.5.4? Also, please send some logs if you have playback issues.

There is a pending merge request for Material You. It won't be included in the next version though. The version after next one will be 4.0.
