You can set the crop and the aspect ratio as properties on the VLCMediaPlayer object to do what you want.
@fkuehne Thanks for your reply, would you be kind enough to tell me what the code would be to insert, to set to 16:9 and/or to stretch to fill the window if the window is already 16:9 shape?

Actually I've sorted it, it's one of those times when the solution is staring you right in the face. I followed the advice here https://www.feepk.net/2012/05/02/customizing-vlc-for-mac-1st-update/ and just closed the playlist window. VLC still runs fine and videos launch and close exactly as desired...
