Been having the same issue for a while now. I've been downloading versions from the VLC website for almost half a year now, as 'check for updates' for some reason doesn't seem to be working.

Hi all, Just to report a bug, ever since I upgraded to VLC 3.0.5 (Mac), subtitles of my HEVC encoded films don't display properly anymore. Instead of subtitles, I get glitches and scanlines.
