I googled that "direct3d11 error" message and found a suggestion to disable hardware acceleration. It worked. I tested by playing a full file in VLC at x4.00 speed and there were no playback errors.

I tried these suggestions before reporting this issue: reset my preferences, retry with latest nightly build of 3.0.5 and 4.0.0, and search this forum for duplicate posts.
