De-selecting;try to disable hardware decoding in preferences.
Preferences/Input codecs/Video Codecs/videotoolbox/Use Hardware decoders only
works well for me on Macosx 10.11.6, MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, VLC Version 3.0.3 Vetinari (Intel 64bit). FYI. Thank you.
