Same problem. mp4, avi, mkv files all start off 'shaky' (from side to side) then settle down. VLC can unexpectedly quit sometimes at any point; other times after a rewind back, a few seconds, other times when I watched a video and then come back to VLC after a break and attempt to watch another vide...
