I eventualy found the answer and you won't believe how simple and straightforward it is!

Open VLC and open Tools -> video effects -> essential -> uncheck the image adjust checkbox. DONE!

This worked perfectly for me!

All of my video playback have a very annoying zig zag / staircasing pixel effect on the screen. It started suddenly and won't go away.
