Re: Gapless audio on iOS

This is indeed correct. We really want to add support for gapless playback on all the platforms, but we are not sure yet whether this will be part of version 4 or not. OK, great. Out of curiosity since gapless playback is often an issue even on other players. What's the big challange with gapless?

Re: Gapless audio on iOS

Thanks, but this was for iOS so it's not necessarily the same thing.
But the obvious conclusion is no gapless on any platform.
Too bad.

Gapless audio on iOS

Is there some way to make playback of audiofiles gapless?
I tried flac and mp3, playing from an (Apple) SMB-server but I get interruptions between gapless tracks.

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

...The problem is simple: you cannot have both file and URL at the same time. You can also not have both relative and absolute locations....
And the solution is user option but not if you are dogmatic.
Bye bye.

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

I will leave this discussion now because it’s going in circles. But to summarize: %-encoding is mandatory for URL:s So from that perspective the new VLC3-way of encoding is correct. However the de facto standard for M3U playlists used by a vast number of systems and software is often not %-encoded a...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

Versions 2.0, 2.,1 and 2.2 wrote absolute paths. So you could only open the playlist on the exact computer that generated it , and only if you did not move your media library. This rightfully infuriated a lot of users. This information is not correct. Yes it is correct and also easily verifiable fr...

True since ver 3, there's the problem. Versions 2.0, 2.,1 and 2.2 wrote absolute paths. Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

It's defined by the URL specification. Yes, I now realize that's the reason for this dogmatism. Seems like the fact that Fraunhofer ages ago chose the letter "U" in their suffix have made you shut your eyes for how M3U-playslists have been used and produced since 1996. Whetether or not it...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

URL are not defined by Fraunhofer. Unlike M3U, they are formally and well defined by IETF standard number 66 (a.k.a. RFC3986). %-encoding is the only way to represent non-URL-safe characters. VLC only percent encodes where unavoidable. True since ver 3, there's the problem. And the fact thet M3U is...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

Seems like Fraunhofer where the original developers of M3U and URL:s with the %-encoding where not mandatory. I'm not sure it was even invented back in 1997. So it should be in relation to Fraunhofer we call everyone else "third party", including VLC. https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJ...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

The use of URLs in M3U is very old - at least as old as web radios, so more or less as old as M3U itself. The U in M3U stands for URL afterall. It is also the only format that supports all VLC playlist entries, and can be moved/stored outside the local file system. As I said, I have no objections t...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

And using the % breaks other things. There is a difference between breaking a legitimate use case, and exposing a bug in another software. Conclusion, they should have both options. I doubt that the option can be explained in understandable fashion to users. But patch welcome. If you believe the ol...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

Since Winamp times there is no percent-encoding/URL encoding of paths of local files in m3u playlists. VLC could also preserve the option to save m3u playlists for local files without the special encoding, just lists of human-readable paths in simple text files (ANSI/UTF8). VLC supports/loads them,...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

That doesn't really "prove" anything since VLC did not use that URL-format with escape charactes until recently but they have called their playlists M3U for ages and so has many other applications not using that "standard". If you are implying that VLC invented URLs in M3U, you ...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

Thanks Rémi but I meant what it's called when %-signs and numbers are used instead of blankspace in paths. So it's not the file format but the way to encode paths this way I wanted to know the name of. It's called URL. No, not really. Replacing characters by the percantage charcter followed by numb...

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

I compared this to iTunes and that program does not use %-characters and numbers in it's path descriptions. I wonder why VLC has changed this? I don't think it complies to the standard for m3u playlists:

Re: Playlist m3u wrong encoding / chars

I just had the same problem. I use VLC o create playlists for Sonos (which for some strange reason is too stupid to create them itself) and after updating the new format does not work anymore.

Anyone who knows what this new format where space is replaced with %-signs and stuff is called?
