Any updates on this? My chromebook is half a useful as it was without VLC.

If google is not bringing it back, is there a way we can download it outside of the chrome web store?

I am trying to get vlc on my chromebook to watch movies - because literally nothing else works - and was dismayed to find that it is gone from the chrome web store (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/vlc/obpdeolnggmbekmklghapmfpnfhpcndf).
