You may have figured out by now or will soon that VLC is garbage.

I have Fedora 27 and VLC 3.0.0-rc5 Vetinari. With a DVD movie inserted in the internal laptop CD/DVD drive, the sound plays but there is no video. Other movie files like *.avi and *.mp4 play fine.
