I think I've sorted it. VLC was only seeing part of the network and therefor couldn't connect to the other part which contained the NAS. I've juggled the settings in VLC so it now finds the NAS via UPnP. Whether this will remain across updates to both VLC and tvOS remains to be seen.

When I first installed VLC on the AppleTV it found the server no problem and I've only done updates since then without altering any settings either in VLC or the Synology NAS. The version ...

I see VLC 1.1.3 is now out and I'm using it on my Apple TV. There is still an error msg when it starts trying to locate the server (Synology DS216+II), but it does continue after that and appears to be working OK.

Have the same problem. It seems to be cause by having a QNAP NAS (Maybe other brands too) connected to the same network.
