Had the same problem, and this worked for me.

I fixed it by installing 'lame'. Just open your terminal, type a command to get 'lame' (it's different for each Linux version), and that should do it. It's pretty straightforward and worked well for me.

Have you tried updating your graphics drivers? Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause issues like this after a system update. Also, it might be worth checking if your PC's system requirements still match the needs of the updated VLC version

Tried all of the above with Win10 64bit latest updates installed to 28 Dec 2017 with VLC 2.2.6 umbrella and nothing works. I'll keep it brief. Believe me, I tried everything mentioned above. Perhaps VLC 3 will do the trick.
