Rather than misusing terms like "insanity", "legitimately", and "literally" you would get more traction if you advocated mechanisms for providing your own icon files for your personal iconography. For all I know this capability already exists.

I've tried the JAVA_HOME definition as quoted, unquoted, and the old DOS format as above. No joy.
The VLC log puts out:
libbluray error: BD-J menus not supported. Playing without menus. BD-J support: 1, JVM found: 0, JVM usable: 0

So, the problem is in the bluray library.

I'm running 3.0.1 on Windows 10.
By using qtdiag I was able to determine that VLC's font size is 8.
Is there any config location other than vlcrc or vlc-qt-interface.ini that actually affect the fonts VLC uses?
