Ok, I double clicked the vlc icon and before the player even opens I get the error. Is there another way to fix this or am I just doing something wrong?

Everytime I open my VLC player I get an error that says VLC has encountered a problem and needs to close. I saw a previous post on this issue and the answer was to reset the preferences and I, not being a very computer literate person, have no idea how to do this. Can someone help me? Thank you so m...
