So I just tried the latest nightly (vlc3.02) and this problem still exists. A few more months and it'll be 2 years since I first reported this. Aside from an mp3 cpu spike issue and an unwieldy Icecast list, 2.2.4 Weatherwax works just fine. It's just as well I guess.

The underlying cause of this is a delayed or unfulfilled vlc read-request.
