Re: Reverse frame by frame

As such, reverse frame by frame can be implemented, but with the minor limitatiosn of unbound memory usage and unbound processing time. "can be implemented" is good news. I always convert the films to be analysed under H.264 (now hevc 265) with Handbrake. At compression level 20, he GOPs ...

Re: unencrypted DCP playback

As of yesterday the free open source DCP-o-Matic standalone DCP verification player 2.11.54 was released with features that expensive proprietary players do not yet offer. Audio is in sync, meta subtitles (color, position, effects and appearence) are respected, clicks on the scrollbar hit their targ...

Rémi Denis-Courmont : How many different file formats did you try? What was the GOP length? @Rémi, by not answering my " how do I know what's the GOP length of an H.264 file ? " you didn't help me answer your question... ... but I finally found a way : ffmpeg being installed in the CLI te...

Re: Reverse frame by frame

That was a rhetorical question. My search for an app or a tool to get access to the GOP length and I/B/P sequence was triggered by your rhetorical question. It made me discover there is no means for us simple mortals to understand why some compressed films are watchable and some others not ; so, Re...

Re: Reverse frame by frame

Ok so say H.264... How many different file formats did you try? What was the GOP length? Did you try with "infinite" GOP? @Rémi How do you know what's the GOP of an H.264 file ? Is there an app on the web or a tool within VLC to get access to the GOP length and I/B/P sequence too? Thanks.

Re: Reverse frame by frame

To bring low latency to video gamers, NVIDIA recommends to encode H.264 with an "infinite" Group of Pictures ; but low latency is detrimental to image quality, For film students and filmmakers there is no advantage to analyse a film coded under this GOP , for me the sweet spot (quality vs ...

Re: Reverse frame by frame

It is a hard problem. for sure! but my test with h264 on the IINA player shows their reverse frame by frame method is very usable. Note : you have to click the ‘Playback’ pane and press ‘alt’ to read the shortcuts, e.g., ‘alt’ ‘cmd’ —> : next frame / immediate display. .......‘alt’ ‘cmd’ <— : previ...

Re: Video playback colors don't match Quicktime & other players

Seen as 32x32 pix X-ICON images on Firefox, I see no difference at all between
VLCtest_nogamma.mp4 and VLCtest_nocolor.mp4... can you tell us why there is none ?
If it's a new VLC setting, I hope swrobel will share his reaction and comments.
thanks,

Re: Video playback colors don't match Quicktime & other players

I have since switched to using IINA which reproduces colors correctly. I just tested vlc-3.0.0-2017 09 07 and the colors are still washed out (incorrect). I am very surprised, the color comparison between the three apps shows that Quicktime is on the subdued side (I like it better..), and that VLC ...

any suggestions on working with DCP's in VLC for macOS? version 2.2.7 Umbrella (sept. 2017) still can't. but good news: the latest 3.0.0 Tassinari opens DCPs and immedialy shows the third jpg2000 image of the j2c file with very good resolution, and a progressing play slider. :) bad news: neither th...

Re: Pitch Shifter/Changer

I'll try to record the VLC playback with the effect included, losslessly Looking at analog waveforms will tell you nothing about distortion, intermodulation and granularity ; the only way to evaluate a pitch shifter is to analyse its digital output with a spectrum analyser. I guess VLC can store th...

to insure that VLC & Audacity modified signals are equally treated,
I want to store both then convert them alternatively through the same DtoA chain.
Problem, I didn't find a way to record the VLC modified sound like Audacity does it,
what's your method?

Re: Pitch Shifter/Changer

Did you installed Audacity to check the difference? Yes I did. It was utmost easy to set the +/- values on the self explanatory Audacity. But I'm still unable to do the same on the provisional interface of the yesterday VLC's test version for MacOS. We should leave the developper some more time to ...

Re: Reverse frame by frame

A short explanation from you will do !
If that is the format you select over mkv, avi, etc., students** (and profs) will understand
why they have to Handbrake convert their study film, whatever its original format, to mp4.

When you change the pitch, the audio quality gets notably worse.

Actually, one needs to use: vlc /path/to/DCP/ --avcodec-options {lowres=1
Is VLC close to playback DCPs ?

the latest v.3.0.0 for MacOS displays DCP's J2K images but in static mode only : neither the audio nor the images nor the soft subtitles follow the real time playing slider.
