It is five years later (Aug. 2016) and this still doesn't seem possible on Linux...

I have an external monitor and would like to output fullscreen video to the external monitor from my laptop -which will serve as the control.
I'm currently running Linux Mint 18.

Any thoughts/points in the right direction will be appreciated.
