I just downloaded a few x265 files to v3.2.13 VLC-iPadOS 15.1/iPad Air 4 and I was able to play them via SMB on the v3.0.12 VLC-tvOS 15.1.1/ATV4K.

I would look at the log file on the Ubuntu SMB server. It is possible there is an issue with Ethernet on the Ubuntu SMB server. If possible try testing a win10 or macOS SMB server. If iClould is working and no update to VLC was made, I would suspect the problem is on the Dropbox side.

Try Google Drive and OneDrive if you can.

Good to see you were able to identify the SMB share problem on Ubuntu.

However I don't understand when you previously posted, "Infuse sees the SMB share as well as all of the files without a problem."

I don't think it can be done right now, the people from VLC can confirm.

The workaround is a two stage process, first to download it to your Mac/PC and then use 'Sharing via WiFi' to download it to the iOS devices.

To eliminate possible network issues, upload the file using 'Sharing via WiFi' to the ATV-4K and then try playing it.

Probably not related, but also try turning Hardware Decoding OFF on the ATV-4K. It seemed fix my problem playing Avatar & Interstellar MKV files.

You will need a wifi network in the car for DLNA or Air Play.

Alternatively you could wire up a Apple TV to 12V DC and connect the HDMI to the AV input of the TV via adapters.

Wiring up to 12V DC is relatively easy and cheap as you can solder the wires to the internal board of the Apple TV.

As far as I am aware this is because of Apple's iOS security.

The file either has to be located within the App or externally on a Network/Cloud drive.

There are other Credentials issues with Network Shares that I have observed, I will wait for the upcoming update to see if they are fixed.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC-iOS?

I have done this for numerous other Apps to fix problems with those specific App.
