This is not a VLC issue but a Windows Phone 8.1 Service Pack 2 in a Lumia 640 XL problem. Windows 8.1 appears to be set to recognise only xbox and music stored on the phone and not the SD. I am using the latest version of VLC - it is the ONLY player I have found so far that will read my SD card on my Lumia 640 running Windows 8.1 Service Pack 2!

The issue I have is there is no stop or pause button visible once a track starts playing. Any ideas?
