Just played movie length M4V which plays flawlessly. MP4 works just fine. However, the MKV playback is very patchy... freezes every few seconds. Tested with files of 30 second duration and same result.

Get an "empty folder" message with a basic SMB share using OS X El Capitan and most recent iOS release (9.2) when is a patch being released?

Local Network shows the computer and accepts the Username and Password successfully. After that though, no files are visible.
