I need to mute for the first 30 seconds of playback (every track). Would this be easy to do?

What ever happened to this? To summarize: we to control the volume of each channel.

VLC has lots of other audio effects, so it's odd that something this basic was never included. Radios have had it since the 1970s...

This really should be changed. " Always reset audio level to " implies it's not going to be affected by mute status, but for some reason it is. VLC needs an option like "remember mute status", or the audio level slider in that setting should just have a "mute" checkbox....

Bump. To be specific, I've double-checked that everything is as it should be; the audio channel remap filter simply isn't working. No one has opened a bug tracker ticket for it. Sorry, I just realized I wasn't clear enough. I meant display it automatically when the stream is playing, similar to how the "time elapsed" is always displayed in the status bar.

Is there any way to display the download speed (bandwidth) of a network stream?
