Fixed it. I reset all the preferences. I didn't need to do any more of the other steps listed here

VLC has always been pretty stable over the years I've used it but that ended yesterday. I tried to open a 720p mp4 I know played before and VLC blinked, and I got the crash popup... did I want to send an error report. I installed the latest version I downloaded yesterday, which apparently uninstalle...

Nope... I take that back. enabling hardware acceleration hasn't helped.

The problem seems to be with the sharpening filter. Odd since I've run VLC with it on before.

Never mind... I think I found a way... enabling hardware decoding.
