When will NTSC DVD playback be fixed?

NTSC DVD playback is not a buttery smooth experience. Early versions from 10 or so years ago worked just fine.

By lurching I mean the image pauses or hesitates for about a 3rd of a second every second or slightly less.

Problem seems to stem from DVD framerate 29.97fps being different than a 60HZ PC monitor. 29.97 doesn't evenly divide into 60. And the resulting jitter shows up in any panning scene. Other players handle it fine.

VLC needs a way to correctly sync the framerate between DVD and a 60HZ PC monitor. This lack of exact syncing causes jerkiness/jittering when playing back standard DVD files or the actual disc. Other players have buttery smooth horizontal scrolling, VLC does not. This wasn't a problem on 1.x of VLC ...

The problem stems way back to a change made in 1.x some years ago. It isn't going to be fixed because disc media files (VOB, TS for example) are considered outdated and not of the streaming type.

Use a different player.

Been trying to get this addressed for over a year now. No one seems to have interest in even acknowledging the issue. So good luck!

Anyone figure out how to get smooth DVD playback? Too much stuttering during camera pans. Problem has been with VLC ever since versions after 1.0.5.

This problem has been present since anything after version 1.0.5. It is even present in the 4.x.x nightlies.

Not confident they understand or recognize the problem.

VLC used to play them buttery-smooth at one time many moons ago. Version 1.0.5 was the last one that did so.

Still not getting a buttery smooth playback on TS/DVD files or discs. Issue is especially noticeable on scenes with smooth panning. There's always a slight skip or hesitation.

Also tried a nightly build. Same problem. And it has been present in every version past 1.0.5

I couldn't tell you. I'm just a schmuck'ol user that's played with trying to fix this for hours. I could guess that it won't be fixed because VOBs and DVDs overall are artificially dated and no one wants anything to do with them. And no one in a position of power to fix it has recognized the issue a...

No settings changes will fix this issue. Version 1.0.5 is the highest that does not have the problem. But downgrading that far isn't really practical.

Interlacing doesn't change anything. The problem happens with versions higher than 1.0.5.

1.0.5 and earlier doesn't exhibit the choppy lurching artifact.

The solution to the lurching/choppy/stuttering DVD playback is to donwgrade to v1.0.5. But that's not really practical considering the age of the software and lack of refinement compared to today; some 10 years out of date. BUT IT WORKS. There seems to have been some change between v1.0.5 and v1.1.0...

Not interested in using that. Cut the spam.

I'm having this subtle stuttering issue also. Tried it on a vintage XP rig all the way to my i7-8700 win10. Frame-by-frame forward & reverse buttons would be a nice thing to have. As it stands now, the step forward and step backward buttons don't do frame by frame.

With the number of videos sporting out of sync audio, I'd like to see a tool/button (similar to the playback speed slider) be made available without having to drill down through a menu.
