Since the VLC 3 series has come out, if the video window is not embedded within the player, screensavers kick in. It's a huge regression as far as I'm concerned. However, I think the VLC folks consider it a low priority bug.

Try going to Tools -> Preferences ->Interface under simple preferences. There should be a preference that says auto raise the interface. Try setting that to Never.

The first thing I would check is the system's mixer. On my Win 8, I have a speaker icon in the system tray, at the right of the task bar. While VLC is running, right-click the speaker icon, and select Open Volume Mixer. Check and see if the volume slider is pushed up for VLC.

There is a work-around on the bottom to make the setting work. Haven't tested it.

There are 32 and 64 bit versions available. The 64 bit one I have, has a digital signature by VideoLAN.

For what I do, I have not noticed any difference between the 32 and 64 bit VLCs.

Well, either VLC can't play the particular flavor of .au file, or there is something wrong with the .au files.
I played that test .au file in Winamp and that works. So, I would test the .au file in a different media player.

A .au file is as new to me as an .xspf file. I downloaded http://www.gargaro.com/sounds/gore.au and it played in Winamp, VLC and Foobar2000.
