In the mean time, you can simply try renaming the file to 8 chars name + 3 chars extension, and it will mostly likely be as fast as before.

Nice catch! Can confirm: I copied the file to the local SSD and it start immediately.
But, the NAS is far from slow (it easily saturate a 1Gbit link), and previous versions of VLC had no problems.
