Follow "Subtitle>Subtitle track"?

I guess VLC could not read home-made soft subtitles. Maybe you can try to join the subtitles to picture by using third party converters.

I'd prefer to backup DVD to Video_TS folder then play with VLC. It's much simpler to work with DVD folder than a physical disc. May you can give it a try.

Blu-ray protected by lastest encryption may not be able to play with VLC. Try other bluray programs.
