Could it be that the video is a MPEG-2 file? If yes then QT Pro etc. needs the separate MPEG-2 Playback Component (costs money).

It's a separate download and that's on purpose.

Try Democracy Player from http://www.getdemocracy.com/. It is a Video Podcast client with BitTorrent support. The Linux and Windows versions are built on top of VLC.

Yep, problem seems to be Windows only.
Also happens on Mac OS X (tried with 0.85 as well as trunk-20060902).
