How can I have video with controls on my laptop screen and a full screen video without controls on an external monitor?

How should I copy a video DVD to my hard drive for playing in VLC? Should I just copy over the AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS files from the disk to my hard drive, or "rip" the dvd, or create an ISO from the dvd? Do I need any special software for doing any of the above? Thank you
