In windows, when I drop a folder onto the VLC media player icon VLC very nicely begins to play all the mp4 files in the folder. When I drop a shortcut to that folder onto the icon, VLC doesn't do much of anything. Could a shortcut reference to a folder be resolved please?

You aren't having problems with the DVD region code that is embedded are you? Where are you located, and where did your DVDs come from? Can you play them on any device?

Are you able to play the file with any other program (MediaMonkey, Windows Media Player, ...). Perhaps your file did not download properly.
