Using YAST and a boatload of installation sources (Packman wasn't working right), got a viable VLC to run...only now, it won't do anything without wxWidgets. More investigations ahead...but not tonight.

Thanks for pointing out that I needed to do an upgrade to faad2. However, that doesn't change the error message. Neither does adding -vvv to the vlc command. I'm not sure how you managed to replace faad2, as any attempt I make to uninstall it gives me an error based on dependencies on other rpm-s that vlc needs at the level *they* are already at. There seems to be quite a lot of conflicting dependencies in vlc. Should this be a bug report? Thanks, Michael

I'm having the same problem now, and there is almost no information out there on how to solve it...but a fair number of questions about it.
