I forgot exactly how I did it. You need to enable beta updates. Once you are on the beta channel, the VLC updates pushed to your phone come from beta channel only. Also: I'd appreciate it if in playlists you can delete songs instead of just remove them from the playlist. Like, it's not the end of the world if you can't, but it'd be nice to have the option.

I vote no. That would be contrary to the role of playlist and dangerous.

Best way I've found to stream videos from computer to TV:

1. Buy 2nd generation (2016) Amazon Fire TV stick.
2. Sideload VLC for Android (ARMv7).
3. Set up SMB host for file sharing.
4. Place videos to stream on SMB share.
5. Browse to SMB folder in VLC.

It's hard to say what's causing your problem without more information:
Are you sure the ZTE is actually on the same network as your SMB host?
Do apps on the ZTE other than VLC see your SMB host and the shared files?
Do other network devices see the SMB host and the shared files?
