I think it could use cast SDK for volume control at least. Except if it's about the license or code portability.

All other streaming applications provide possibility to control sound. VLC while casting to Chromecast doesn't allow it. The volume control in the cast mode seems to be broken. I don't have one. I am casting to a Monitor with HDMI splitter. I have to control sound with Google Home app on my Android smartphone. I think it's missing feature, but I understand, not the most important if you have limited resources.

Thank you for answer. I find it stupid to provide VLC update with new release only, especially that LTS Ubuntu versions are released each 2nd year only. I will try using debian repository. It would be good to write this information on Ubuntu website.

Voice control doesn't work when casting video to Chromecast on linux. It doesn't seem to be any other build in option to control volume of Chromecast.

VLC 2.1.4 in Ubuntu. Previously there was an option in Preferences - > Playlist - > default to load specific playlist on start-up of VLC. After update it disappeared and every time i have to load my playlist of radio station after restart. Any suggestions? Stop using VLC? Or there is something else?

2nd problem is that Date column in podcasts is empy. It looks like very not finished product.
