I downloaded VLC just for that purpose but I can't find any instructions on how to do it. I've clicked on media, selected convert/save, browsed to a file and selected it, provided a name with .avi extension, hit convert, and it just draws a blue bar across the bottom like it was doing something, but...

Did you ever get an answer or figure out how to do it? I downloaded VLC because I thought it would convert MP4 files to AVI, but after reading the documentation and the convoluted description of how to use it, I don't know what it can do. It does play my .avi or .mp4 files, though.
