Out of curiosity, have you been hitting the [00000334] ffmpeg encoder warning: Only mono supported (amr_nb@0x825a320) issue? Seems like the only way I can get around it is to grope amr.c directly and remove the check, unfortuntely the audio goes bonkers - I haven't found a way to force dvb:// input ...

Packmans VLC is compiled with --enable-dvb Most standard Hauppauge cards work with the DVB drivers, also those from Technotrend work fine (Most likely because they're almost identical I guess :p ) - I always suggest PCI versions because they tend to work more reliably than USB - at least in my field...

You didn't say whether it was DVB-T/C or S but I'll guess it's T and suggest:

Use Skins2 module and make your own pretty skin?

It's not like programs like iTunes are pretty, iTunes is infact one of the worst programs I've had the displeasure of using on OSX, it didn't take me long to compile my own version of amaroK on X11 and use that instead.
