Try changing the video output modules.
Tools->preferences->Video->Output:
Save and restart VLC.

AFAIK the thumbnails are generated by windowsOS, VLC doesn't have anything to do with it. Your first image has mpg videos what is recognized fine by windows but the second image has brrip files that I doubt it knows them.

Maybe a video output problem or your driver (video).
Have you tried selecting another video output?
If not help, try updating your video card driver.

If you have selected the default audio output module or DirectX, then you can select in:
Audio->Output modules->DirectX: Speaker configuration=Mono.
I think it does the trick.

In Win8 x64 seems to be no problem with the 2.0.6-win32 version (I suppose all of you talk about 32 bit version, right?), so apparently is a problem with qt and aero or something like that.

Ok etix, so we go to testing it then. There are some errors or behavior that you expect/search? I installed the last msi file and all work fine, the unique error was when the installer tried to launch the VLCmp when it finished. What is the difference between the exe and the msi?
According to Wikipedia it is better to use msi, or at least is what MS recommends:

So it is advisable to use it instead of exe?
