I also have this problem, but today, after reading this thread, perhaps I have good news. I first downloaded 0.8.6i and deleted the preferences. I opened a file and played it. There was no stuttering. Then I downloaded 0.9.9a. It asked to delete the preferences (I said yes) and so far, it is working...
Every time I open a DVD, VLC shows "Use DVD menus" as selected. I always turn this off. I would like to make that the default behaviour -- no menus. I looked in the preferences and under Access modules/DVD with menus, I unselected "Start directly in menu". However, when I insert ...
When I first bought my Mac Mini one year ago, I could play all DVDs. However, after software upgrades from Apple, VLC was no longer region-free. Now, I have reinstalled the original OS (10.4.5) and QT (7.0.4), but using the current version (0.8.6a) of VLC, it is still not region-free. The only softw...
I posted my request in the features request forum, but I was very surprised and happy to discover that the OS X version of VLC is the only one that has an on-screen controller! Unfortunately, a developer responded that he doesn't have a Mac, so he can't help. So I am posting this request here. The o...
I have several DVDs that were filmed in one language, but may have other audio languages included as options in the menu. These DVDs also have subtitle options. What I am trying to do is have the DVD play in the original audio language, but have subtitles display only if that language is _not_ one o...
The new on-screen controller is great (nightlies)! It would be nice if the time would have a preference to either show elapsed time or remaining time. It would be even nicer if you could set the preference, then click on the time display to see the other time.
I've just installed the latest nightly (PPC - 2006-10-07) and the onscreen controller that I had seen in the earlier nightlies is now gone and no controller is seen.
Do I need to turn this on in the preferences or has it been removed? Or could there be another kind of problem?
I have found a way to play other regions (I use a program called, I believe, DVD Image to create a disk image on my hard drive which is region free), however, as another solution, I thought I could install an older version of Quicktime since VLC was able to play foreign DVDs until recently. Would yo...
I have noticed this also. If I am willing to delete Quicktime and use only VLC, do you have any idea which system files need to be deleted? BTW, this is not illegal (AFAIK) in my country (The Netherlands).
Well, I am happy to say you seem to be wrong!!! It does work!!! I've tried it with two languages and it worked for both. The only thing is that I have to guess what the 2 or 3 correct letters are. Is there someplace where I can see the correct codes? Many thanks -- this is great!
Many thanks. I found options you mentioned, though it was not easy :( Unfortunately, I see problems with them. I live in Europe and have DVDs in many languages. If the language I list in the options you mention is not on the DVD, I get silence and/or no subtitles. Is it possible to list multiple lan...
I was hoping that VLC could select default languages for audio and subtitles on films and was going to request it in the feature requests, but searched first and found that it had already been requested. The user runs Mac OS X and the reply from a developer was that the feature was scheduled to be a...

In the meantime, do you have any idea how to do this in Apple Script? I can figure out how to launch VLC with the script, but not how to make it start playing.
I have set up my Mac to automatically start VLC when a DVD is inserted. However, although VLC opens, it does not play the DVD. Is there a way I can set VLC so that it will automatically start playing in this situation? Thanks.
I am using VLC for Mac OSX and would very much like to see the addition of contextual menus for navigation, preferences, etc. When watching a film full-screen it is impossible to do anything (other than pause and play) without first shrinking the image so that controls are visibile. It would be nice...
I've used it many times with no problem. If you are worried about space, you can tell it to rip only the film and leave out the extras. If you want a different solution with highly-compressed films, try Bittorrent -- it works very well and you don't need to buy the DVD from the Hollywood thieves.
First I would suggest writing to the studios and telling them you will only pirate films if they don't stop this nonesense! Now, here is the simplest solution: download Mac The Ripper (freeware) and rip your DVD to your hard drive. This can remove the region code. If you don't want to have all your ...
Am I the only one who wants this? If you are watching a film full-screen, do you like having to reduce the picture before using any controls? VLC is already a great program, why not make it better?
VLC is probably the best all-around media player for the Mac right now. However, it is very weak in one area: it has no contextual menus. To be complete, it should have all navigation controls, access to preferences, volume control, etc. in a contextual menu. AFAIK, both Windows and Linux already ha...
