Solved! Remove extraneous libavcodec versions and update to the available latest version

thanks for your hint. Strangely enough, I find the following (multiple) versions of libavcodec installed:

libavcodec52 0.7.15-1.3
libavcodec53 0.10.3-11
libavcodec54 1.1-4.1 with 1.0.4-2.3 available

seems like I really messed up something.

I am running VLC 2.05 on openSUSE 12.1 (i586). .wmv-files are run with lots of static noise that makes it impossible to understand the audio. The video track is displayed ok.
