Actually it was caused by some commit to vlc between 3.0.3 & 3.0.4. Doubt you'll ever see any resolution to this..
(- it's caused solely by the showing of the fullscreen controller, whatever changes to how that's done contains the cause.

And that master-daily ppa is currently dead, should not be used unless one wants a 15 wk+ old dev version...

With 2.2 many online vids no longer play or playbck quite poorly. The same are fine in 2.1.5 or 3.0-git.

I am also using vlc 2.1.2 from ubuntu 14.04 I haven't tried playing any APE files yet. But both version of vlc from ubuntu 14.04 and from the stable branch PPA can't play MusePack files. Version 2.0.8 plays OK on Ubuntu 13.10 In 14.04 some player fail on mpc with currently used libmpcdec6 bug here ...
