Fast Forward faster by skipping to the next keyframe

The ability of fast forward in VLC is impressive. However, is it possible to do frame skipping instead of decoding faster when the fast forward is more than 32x or 64x ? It is clear that for low FF speeds like 2x , 3x this will not work, since keyframes are available every 1 second at best. But perh...

Re: VLC speed up algorithm

Thanks for the interesting hints! ' Which frames get dropped or duplicated depends on your monitor refresh rate anyway, not the source video rate. ' I needed to hear that. Answers from experts like you is valuable and spare a lot of time. For ~1 month I was researching in the literature out of curio...

Re: VLC speed up algorithm

Thanks Remi for your reply. So when playing in 10x speed, the decoder is decoding 300 frames/sec ? The VLC will choose to display 1 frame and skip 9 ? I tried to benchmark the ffmpeg decoder with this command: ffmpeg -benchmark -i INPUT -f null out.null and I got : for 480p h.264 video = 84x speed w...

VLC speed up algorithm

I don't know where to ask, please forgive me if this is not the right place. I am very curious, how is VLC increasing the video speed playback? I suppose the increase of audio speed is by skipping small parts of the audio. What about the video speed up algorithm? Is it by frame skipping or using a c...

Re: Video is scrambled for fast playback speeds more than 10x

I have reread my post, and now I am suspicious about the RAM speed. This is the only related hardware specification common between the two systems (1600MHz). Perhaps the speed of the RAM is the bottleneck. I will try to find out how to measure the RAM bandwidth utilization and measure them on both s...

Re: Video is scrambled for fast playback speeds more than 10x

Thanks a lot Rémi for your informative input! Your opinion is very logical, and that what I have expected myself. However, what made me confused is my weird test results that I had performed on 2 different CPU power computers and got exactly the same playback speed results with VLC. Let me give you ...

Video is scrambled for fast playback speeds more than 10x

I tried the same set of videos on 2 computers. PC1 has almost twice the CPU power of the 2nd. Nevertheless, I cannot see any difference in the quality of playing high playback speeds than the computer with the slower CPU. Both of them are starting to show a bit of scrambling the video on speeds arou...

Re: VLC 2.1.0 audio channel mapping incorrect for LF and RF.

We don't know about this bug. Try to re-do it with DirectSound module as output. Hi Jean-Baptiste, You mean to make the Audio Output Module as DirectX Audio output? I have already tried this also, and did not work (i.e., the same issue happened with choosing DirectX Audio output instead of Default)...

Re: VLC 2.1.0 audio channel mapping incorrect for LF and RF.

Hi, I found a bug in vlc-2.1.0-git-20120903-0003-win32 also, in the new remap audio filter. I tried to remap the 2channels of a stereo audio channels of a video file from the front left and right to any other channel (e.g, rear left and right or side left and right or center and sub woofer). In all ...

Re: VLC 2.1.0

Hi, Any hope that VLC 2.1.0 version will be released soon? By the way, I have installed the vlc-2.1.0-git-20120903-0003-win32 to try the remap audio filter. It looks very promising. Thanks for all the developers!! However, I tried to remap the stereo audio channels of an mp4 video file (left to rear...
